Crown Lifting
This is the operation of removing the lower branches to achieve greater light penetration to the ground beneath and also to insure vehicle or pedestrians do not damage themselves when passing by a tree or a row of trees.
Crown lifting can be more beneficial than a Crown reduction if the tree is to stay as natural looking as possible.
Crown THINNING
This is used to decrease the sail effect that a trees canopy can have when windy conditions are present. With the removal of particular branches to increase air flow and in-turn to increases the structural stability of the tree.
The amount removed from the centre of the tree should be no greater than 30%. This is to avoid undue stress.
Crown thinning is generally done by the removal of dead and crossing branches and then the removal of large branches begins to achieve the desired outcome.
Crown Reduction
The reducing of tree crowns is popular but it takes many years to be good at achieving a natural and balanced look. The reduction points should be well chosen and provide suitable growth areas for the coming growing seasons.
Re-shaping can also be achieved but in many cases the trees themselves provide secondary canopy stages which should not be ignored.
Formative Pruning
The use of Formative pruning is to ensure the best possible growth conditions for trees.
Young trees require this to avoid mechanically failure at points that could have been sorted cheaply and easily earlier in their life.
Pollarding
Pollarding is the practice of removing all growing material from a tree to allow new growth to continue the trees cycles.
Once a tree has been pollarded it has to then be continually pollarded to avoid leak attachment where the new growth has grown.
Old pollards are a great way to continue the life of a tree that could under different circumstances have died.
Dead Wooding
The removal of dead material from the canopy to reduce the risk of injury to persons using the space beneath the tree.
When no space is required the dead wood can be used as a vital habitat for many animals and can be more beneficial being left than it can to remove it. Both in the tree and also on the ground to form beetle banks and others such habitat areas.
